Bartle For The Masses! Posted by: Integ on September 17, 1:51 am
It is with great pleasure that the fine folk here at Revolution G proudly present to you the 10th installment in our podcast series: An interview with Richard Bartle! Who's Richard Bartle you ask? And you call yourself a gamer! That's like a baskeball player asking who Michael Jordan is, or a classical cellist asking who Pablo Casals is. I mean just DUH, right? (Major bonus points to you if you actually know who Pablo Casals is, nerdling.) Richard Bartle is widely regarded as the modern-day father of gaming psychology, and is essentially the reason for why you play whatever MMO you're currently playing. Why? Well you'll just need to listen to figure that out won't you? Anyway, it's posted in all of its Bartle-ly glory and is now ready for your ear-ly consumption. Richard discusses all about what makes virtual worlds good...and not so good.
Have you ever wondered what he meant when he said he'd shut down WoW if given the opportunity? Well his answer (in very clear terms) is included (free of charge to you, while supplies last) in this podcast! We recorded this particular episode with Richard on the phone all the way over there in merry olde England. If it sounds like he's talking on a phone, your ears are working just fine. Richard has more gaming experience than most of us have actual life experience. He's been at it longer than you, and is more or less somewhat responsible for you being the MMO geek you are today. The least you can do to thank him for your hopeless addiction is to go listen to his interview with all due haste!
Richard Bartle Interview Posted by: Mayson on September 12, 11:34 am
In preparation for the ground-breaking episode #10 podcast with Richard Bartle we want to lead you to some articles that Richard has written. Richard is one of the greatest minds in the gaming industry today and most certainly one of the most outspoken.
The following article is entitled: "HEARTS, CLUBS, DIAMONDS, SPADES: PLAYERS WHO SUIT MUDS." If you have never taken the time to read it, you need to take the time right now! The following is an abstract of the article, notice how it transcends MUDS and touches on the social dynamics of virtual worlds.
"Four approaches to playing MUDs are identified and described. These approaches may arise from the inter-relationship of two dimensions of playing style: action versus interaction, and world-oriented versus player-oriented. An account of the dynamics of player populations is given in terms of these dimensions, with particular attention to how to promote balance or equilibrium. This analysis also offers an explanation for the labelling of MUDs as being either "social" or "gamelike"."
Finally, we want to let you know that we're working VERY hard behind the scenes on some amazing new things that you guys are going to absolutely love! We've got some incredible stuff on our plate right now, and when it hits, it's going to hit like a category 5 hurricane. It's all in the works and coming your way soon. We'll have some updates shortly with specifics as we prepare to go live with some features that'll knock your socks off. Stay tuned!
New Feature!! Glossary! Posted by: Mayson on September 4, 11:30 am
We have spent some time developing a glossary of terms that pertain to the publication and media on Revolution G. Take a few moments to look it over and let us know what you think guys!
The glossary is not meant to be all encompassing, but to simply define some of the more commonly used terms around here for our readers. We feel that we have covered many of the more complex or abstract terms that we throw around in the podcast and on the boards and we hope that we can all better communicate on related topics as a result.
Podcast Episode 9 is LIVE! Posted by: Mayson on August 31, 11:26 pm
It's with great pride and joy that we present to you, hot off the audio-presses, Podcast episode 9! This episode features an interview with Robert Rice, author of the book, "MMO Evolution", and game developer. Believe me when I say that this guy is brilliant, and has some absolutely killer stuff to say. No joke, it's really that good. We discuss not only the current state of the MMO industry (and Robert's decidedly-pointed opinions on WoW and Second Life), but also where the industry *needs* to go to get out of this stagnant development cycle we're in.
Robert also touches on what makes a company really work (i.e. what sorts of employees, how to tackle problems, etc), and more. This is one hefty podcast, weighing in at a total of 49 minutes, but trust me when I say that it's like eating a 49 minute-long ice cream cone, with those little colored sprinkles on top. You do NOT want to miss this, folks. Sit down, get comfortable, curl up with a blanket, invite the entire extended family in, and start listening. You won't be disappointed.
New updates! Posted by: Mayson on August 31, 1:26 pm
Greetings fellow Revolutionaries!
Today we are going to bring you Episode #9 of the Revolution G podcast! In Episode #9 we talk with Robert Rice. Robert is the author of the book "MMO Evolution." In addition to this, he is an expert on Virtual Worlds and MMORPGs. He also blogs regularly at Curious Raven.
Robert's interview with Revolution G is not only eye opening but shakes the industry with some provocative and enlightening statements. We are putting the final touches on this interview right now and believe me this is one you do not want to miss.
Next order of business is upcoming content. As Lindorn posted before, we are growing at a rate that is overwhelming and thus have been a little silent because we don't want to spill all the good events about to take place around here.
I will say however that we have a new site design, theme, content section in which YOU get VERY involved in our casts and a lot more. Revolution G is being revolutionized as we speak into a richer community that you will love.
As for our beloved podcasts, they are going to get even better! I can tell you that the legendary Episode #10 has been recorded and it is with none other then Richard Bartle! Richard's no-holds-barred style was absolutely dynamite for Episode #10 and we cannot wait to share with you what he had to say!
We will have some new blogs, articles and more to share with you in the upcoming days as well as a sneek peek at the new site design!
In episode 10, we interview the one and only Richard
Bartle, who discusses with us his very specific views on the good
things, and the not so good things, about MMOs (including a lot on
one big MMO you've all heard of), and offers up his well-defined
opinions on PvP vs PvE. It's an absolute must-listen, so get
listening already!
In Episode 7 of the Revolution G podcast we sit down with the dev. team from Stray Bullet Games and discuss MMO development, lessons learned, and where their next product is headed. It's a must listen!
Episode 4 contains part 1 of a 2 part series with special guest David Sirlin. Within the interview Keith and Aaron discuss topics with him including mainstream MMORPG's, playing to win, and whether or not today's gamers are "falling off".
